Title : Rheumatic heart disease and balloon mitral valvotomy
Abstract:
Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) remains a significant public health concern in India, particularly among children and young adults in lower socioeconomic and rural populations. Declining trend is seen in some urban areas due to improved hygiene, early antibiotic use for sore throat, and better healthcare access. However rural regions face a persistent RHD burdens. Though results are long term surgical commissurotomy is an invasive procedure with longer hospital stay duration, balloon mitral valvotomy is a minimally invasive procedure with good outcomes. Technique of BMV has a shorter learning curve, however the varied mitral valve anatomy can make it a challenging procedure.
